Staying a single night at sought after campgrounds makes it easier to find availability for last minute trips. Breaking camp every night can be rough, but this kept us on our toes and got us moving early each day!

Trip Recap

  • Day 1: Pitched tent, explored scenic waterfalls on nature hikes during camping trip.
  • Day 2: Broke camp, hiked to beautiful falls at Amnicon Falls on road trip.
  • Day 3: Enjoyed kayaking Plum Lake, relaxing in hammocks, spotted bald eagles in trees.
  • Day 4: Baraga MI: Great facilities, lake view, rough weather on way from Wisconsin.
  • Day 5: The drive from Baraga to St. Ignace is wild and stunningly beautiful.
  • Day 6: From Mackinac Island to Cheboygan, we biked, ate, and camped for the night.
  • Day 7: From Cheboygan to Higgins Lake via Hoeft State Park, had a blast camping!

Day 2

Broke camp at Willow River, did a final hike to falls, then drove to Amnicon Falls and hiked there! Amnicon is relatively small, is a good place if you’re just passing through as the hike to the falls is super short.

Day 4

Wisconsin to Baraga MI. As good a stopover place as any, we had rough weather and rain all afternoon so it was tough setting up camp. Not many trails at this park, but super nice facilities, great view of the lake!

Day 6

Mackinac Island then Cheboygan. Woke up super early and drove to Mackinaw City to take the ferry so our vehicle would be south of the island when we were ready to leave later in the day. We biked M-185 around the island , stopped at all of the usual places, Arch Rock, Devil’s Kitchen, etc. We did lunch at Pink Pony, super fun atmosphere. Drove to Cheboygan State Park and camped there, but didn’t explore at all.
