Backpacking to Positano

We travelled to Positano from Rome. We were backpacking on a budget, so we tried our best to find the cheapest, but fastest way there. We ended up settling on a train, bus, and ferry combo. We left our hostel in Rome at 5am, and jumped on a train bound for Naples. There we switched to a smaller train which took us to Sorrento. The original plan was then to take the scenic ferry from Sorrento to Positano, but the harsh October winds cancelled any and all boast out of port. What ended up happening was that us and the 100 other tourists looking to visit Positano, were relegated to the busses. These busses were definitely cheap (1,50 euros per person), but they were not efficient.

After waiting an hour, we got on the bus and drove the most frightening three hours of my life down to Amalfi. The roads, were narrow and winding, casually grazing the steep cliff sides. When looking out the window, I came face to face with the choppy ocean, 300ft below me. After that stomach churning ride, we then switched buses in Amalfi and started leg two of our journey. This bus ride was shorter, but with similar roads and views. We were then dropped off in the streets of Positano and finally made it to our airbnb after climbing around 300 steps with our 30 pound backpacks.

Our first full day in this paradise. After a wild journey, we were looking forward to a day of relaxation. We began the day by hiking down to the beach. This beach is in the middle of town, and has beautiful views of the cliff houses. For lunch, we stopped by a grocery store and picked up the supplies we needed for sandwiches. We then picnicked on the rocky beach, listening to the waves. The incredible thing about visiting Positano in October is that there are barely any tourists. The streets have a quiet beauty, something I'm sure is not found in the bustling summer months. After our picnic, we strolled the streets and window shopped, before catching the sunset from our balcony.

Our last day in Positano. We first hiked down to the beach again, and this time went for a quick swim. The water was cool, but calm and refreshing. We then got cocktails in plastic solo cups from a vendor down on the dock. We sat there drying in the sun, while the sweet rum warmed us from the inside. Since it was our last day, we decided to splurge on a nice dinner. So that night we found a restaurant with the most incredible views. We sat there from daylight, through sunset, and all the way until dusk, enjoying the most incredible fresh lemon pasta and local wine.
