Best friend's birthday getaway. Just wanted to go somewhere fun, easy, warm - although we did not think through hurricane season!

Trip Recap

  • Day 1: Mimosas at the airport, dolphin show, then poolside laughter until midnight!
  • Day 2: Woke up early, enjoyed sunrises, beach bikes, delicious food, and cocktails!
  • Day 3: Biked to brunch, enjoyed the beach, and ended with a sunset cruise!
  • Day 4: Last beach day with biking, shopping, live music, and great friends!
  • Day 5: Next time, I'll check hurricane season before booking in South Florida!

The house - check it out on VRBO 1083 Old Marco Lane! It is incredible!

Day 1

All girls few from Chicago to Ft Myers on the earliest flights out and met in the airport for mimosas. Rented a car with Sixt which was a first and a great experience - highly recommend. Great car, easy experience, great prices. Drove to Marco which was about 45 minutes to the VRBO house that I rented in Old Marco which looked good in pictures, but in real time was spectacular. Explored the island. Happy hour at Stilts looking out at a free dolphin show (literally dolphins jumping out of the ocean!) and then dinner at the 844 Club. Best part, Marco midnight - back to our house after dinner by 10pm and we laughed poolside (house had a great pool) until we all were ready to go to bed and do it all over again.

Day 2

Early wake up to watch the sun rise from our pool patio - gorgeous! Then we took the beach bikes that came with the house and off we went for a little exercise. South beach all day. Incredible. Lunch and cocktails - so much fun! Dinner at Davide, after dinner drinks at The Sand Bar & the Snook Inn. Marco midnight again - place shuts down around 10-10:30pm, but for us it was great. Gave us time to get back to the house, have a final cocktail or more and then be ready for the next day!

Day 3

Another early sunrise. Again, gorgeous. Bikes to the JW Marriott for brunch. Tipped the bellman to watch our bikes. Walked the beach, picked up shells. Then we went to the mid-island beach. Not as good as South Beach, but we stopped at Publix and bought these huge intertubes which was a blast! We spent the entire day at the beach with our cocktails in the warm water of the ocean meeting all sorts of fun people! Great day! Sunset cruise on Cool Beans out of Isle of Capri - a must do! Dinner at Island Gypsy.

Day 4

Another bike ride and a trip back to South beach with our tubes! Last good beach day. Lunch on the beach. Shopping in the afternoon and College Game Day - clouds came rolling in due to Hurricane Milton! We spent the afternoon having fun at the Snook Inn. Met tons of great people listening to live music. Dinner at La Tavola. Amazing and Motown music/dancing. Marco midnight and a toast to best friends! We loved it.

Day 5

We left with full hearts and great memories, but Hurricane Milton was on the way. We were lucky to thread the needle between Helene and Milton. Next time. I probably would have paid much more attention to when hurricane season was before booking in south Florida!!!

Anything you would add or do differently?

  • Probably would have thought more about hurricane season when planning!
