Layover in Milan

Honestly, it wasn't originally on our list. We were going from Italy to Portugal and the cheapest flight happened to be out of Milan.

Trip Recap

  • Day 1: Milan captured our hearts with cannolis, cathedrals, and budget-friendly pigeon feeding.

Definitely feeding the pigeons. Felling their little feet on your arms and hands made me feel like I was in a Disney movie.

Day 1

We arrived in Milan early morning after taking a high speed train from Florence. Upon getting there, we had no idea what we wanted to see or where to go, so we left our backpacks at the airport and set out walking. Somehow we ended up at cafe in the city center, so we sat and ate cannolis until we felt restless again, and then set out to explore.

After wandering some more, we finally made it to the Milan cathedral, a stunning piece of imposing gothic architecture. I had seen pictures of it before, but nothing compares to the feeling of standing in the square and looking up at it. As we were admiring the views, we noticed many street vendors selling seeds for high prices, so that tourists could get the famous photos with the pigeons in front of the cathedral. Since we were backpacking on a budget, we weren't eager to spend 5 euros on seeds, so we went to the local PAM grocery store and bought our own for 1 euro. We probably ended up spending over an hour on the square, people watching and pigeon feeding. Once the sun began to set, we made our way to a nice pasta restaurant and had our last Italian Cacio e Pepe before heading off to Portugal on a red eye.

  • Spend more time here! Since we were headed off to Portugal, we only got to spend a day in Milan, but it definitely deserves more time!
